About Banko Ware:
Banko ware (Banko-yaki) is one of Japan's most celebrated pottery traditions, renowned for its exceptional heat resistance and unique iron-rich clay composition. The name "Banko" means "eternity" or "everlasting," reflecting the durability and timeless quality of these pieces. This pottery style has been designated as a Traditional Craft of Japan, with a history spanning over 270 years.
The Art of Banko Teapots:
What makes Banko ware teapots truly special is their unglazed, iron-rich purple-brown clay (shidei), which is believed to chemically interact with tea to reduce bitterness and astringency, creating a remarkably smooth, mellow flavor. Tea connoisseurs prize these teapots for the way they enhance the taste of green tea, particularly sencha and gyokuro. Over time, the clay absorbs tea oils, developing a beautiful patina that further improves the brewing quality.
