The Theewaterskloof Dam, a crucial component of the Western Cape Water Supply System, was completed in 1980. Its construction was a significant civil engineering project that involved linking the Sonderend and Berg rivers. The dam, with a capacity of 480,000 cubic metres is the largest in the Western Cape and primarily serves the Cape Town metropolitan area and the surrounding agricultural region. It gained national attention during the severe drought of 2017-2018 when its critically low water levels highlighted the importance of water conservation and the challenges of managing water resources in the face of climate change.
